Many items speak to enmity between the two major political parties with polarization around multiple issues, including what does or does not make someone feel safe; who is an authority, immigration, religion, impeachment, the news, facts, guns, climate change, the environment, civil rights, racial justice, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights. Political scientists warn that our polarization and partisanship -- driven by alienation from the other party, who is seen as a threat to America -- foments conditions that subvert democracy and enable authoritarian rule.
